Alexander Technique

The Alexander technique works through re-establishing the natural relationship between the head, neck, and back - the core of the body that supports the strength of the limbs and which provides the structural environment for breathing and for the internal organs.

Course Units

Level 1 Professional skills provides insight into principles of physical and mental health that are fundamental to performance success. It consists of an introductory seminar series on musicians' health and wellbeing, as well as 10 30-minute practical training sessions in Alexander technique.

Level 2 Alexander technique enhances students understanding of the historical development of, and principles behind, the Alexander technique. Students are encouraged to apply the technique to personal practice and performance.

Level 3 Alexander technique increases students' understanding of the effects of habitual or automatic behaviour on practice and performance and develops their ability to avoid damaging or unproductive tendencies. Students' learning is underpinned by experiential and written work, informed by key reading on the technique and personal experience.
